Explanation:
Was Derren Brown using mind control to achieve such results? I don't think so. What you have seen was some basic physics at work. The first time the boxer tries (and succeeds) to lift a girl, she is standing near him. The second time, she simply positioned herself further away. Therefore, it was much harder - in this case impossible - to lift her. The last guy, the one who did lift her, stepped forward towards her before he tried.
Probability of Derren Brown using suggestions to increase the effect is not completely excluded, however, I seriously doubt that this effect was anything but a clever use of laws of physics. Feel free to try it yourself.
